Salute to Skills: Workshops for Warriors and Hire Heroes USA

Two nonprofit organizations, Workshops for Warriors and Hire Heroes USA, were founded to assist veterans and transitioning service members to gain the skills to succeed in the civilian labor market.

Together, they are combining their expertise in teaching technical skills (WFW) and professional development (Hire Heroes USA) for a holistic approach to veteran training. WFW, based in San Diego, provides state-of-the-art instruction in computer numerical control machining (CNC) and welding at the only nationally accredited advanced manufacturing training facility for veterans in the U.S.

Hire Heroes USA provides personalized professional development through a full suite of employment services including résumé preparation, mock job interviews and in-person workshops.

WFW’s free 16-week training program is a solution to a labor shortage in the advanced manufacturing industry, where an estimated two million jobs will go unfilled by 2025. The skills that veterans learn from WFW and Hire Heroes USA make them a highly prized and sought-after talent pool for employers.

WorkingNation documented the story of U.S. Marine Corps veteran Zachary Pierobello, who learned how to operate CNC mills and lathes and programming skills in SolidWorks and Mastercam. He earned industry-recognized certifications that are a signal to employers that he is ready to enter the civilian workforce. We also followed his journey through the WFW career fair, where he applied what he learned from Hire Heroes USA to secure his new career as a machinist.
